Date Night LA
Quick heads up before we get into the picks: www.haps.club is live. It's a beta companion site to this newsletter that updates more often than a weekly email — more on that below. Bookmark it; it's a good thing to have on the home screen for a Wednesday night when you don't know what to do.
Now — this week is built for going out with someone. The new SUSHISAMBA rooftop in WeHo is finally hitting its stride and it's the most fun seat in town right now. Friday gives you two beautiful no-cover moves a few miles apart — salsa under sunset at Ivy Station, jazz on the lawn at LACMA. And single tickets for the Hollywood Bowl just opened, so Bright Eyes on May 23 is on the table.
Five places to take a date this week. Let's go.
www.haps.club is live.
We've been quietly building a companion site to this newsletter, and the beta is now public. It dynamically pulls from the picks you read here — but it updates more often than a weekly email can. So if it's a Wednesday and you're wondering what to do tonight, that's the move: open haps.club and you'll get something good. Today, this week, the weekend, what's worth booking ahead.
Open haps.club
It's a beta — bookmark it, kick the tires, and reply to this email if anything's broken or missing.
SUSHISAMBA's rooftop is the most fun room in LA right now
639 N La Peer Dr · Open Sun–Wed 5pm–12am, Thu–Sat 5pm–1am
SUSHISAMBA finally landed in LA in March — 11,000 square feet of rooftop with a retractable dome over the Hollywood Hills, costumed dancers, and a Japanese-Brazilian-Peruvian menu that's a little ridiculous in the best way. Order shiso caipirinhas, the crispy tuna rice, the moqueca, and the SAMBA LA roll. Reservations open two weeks out and they go fast — book early in the week for Friday or Saturday. If you can't get a table, the bar is walk-in only and 21+. Smart casual dress code; bring a jacket, the rooftop gets cool after dark.

Salsa under sunset, or jazz on the lawn
Friday May 15, 2026 · Both free
Summer Salsa Nights at Ivy Station kicks off the season this Friday in Culver City. Free 30-minute beginner lesson at 6:30pm with Pepe Gonzalez, then live music from Fermin Sifontes Fusion Salsa until 8:45pm on the open-air plaza. No partner needed, no experience needed, validated parking, ten feet from LA Ale Works for the after-drink.
Or head to Jazz at LACMA on the Smidt Welcome Plaza, 6–8pm, where the Julius Rodriguez Trio plays — pianist with serious Juilliard credentials and a sound that bends jazz into R&B and gospel. Bring a picnic, get there early for a seat, and the new David Geffen Galleries are right there if you want to wander before the set.
Date-night restaurants worth booking now
The places where the room does half the work.

Bar Etoile — Western Ave near Beverly. Tiny, candlelit, Michelin-recognized, French-leaning natural wine bar with a tight seasonal menu. Two seats at the bar is one of the better date setups in the city. Open Tue–Sat from 4:30pm.Book on Resy
Rustic Canyon — Santa Monica. Twenty years in and still the Westside benchmark for warm, refined, seasonal cooking. Quiet enough to actually talk to your date. rusticcanyonrestaurant.com
The Penmar — Venice. First-date proof. A casual neighborhood spot tucked inside the golf course on Rose Ave with a heated patio, a charcuterie-and-wine vibe at sunset, and a price point that doesn't telegraph "I'm trying too hard." thepenmar.com
Budget date ideas that actually work
The price tag doesn't make the date. These five do.
Echo Park swan boat at sunset — $13/hr. Pedal a swan-shaped boat around the lake, lotus beds, downtown skyline behind you, ducks not minding you at all. Wheel Fun Rentals runs them year-round; the LED night-ride version after 7pm is the one. Reservations recommended on weekends. wheelfunrentals.com
Burritos at El Matador Beach — Pick up two burritos from Lily's in Malibu, drive ten minutes north, walk down the cliff stairs at El Matador, eat while the sea stacks turn gold. Get there before noon for parking on weekends; sunset on a weekday is the move.Park info
Bonfire at Dockweiler Beach — free + cost of firewood. The only LA County beach where bonfires are allowed. About 60–80 concrete fire pits, first-come first-served (cannot reserve), fills up fast on summer weekends — show up by late afternoon on a weekday for a guaranteed pit. Bring wood, snacks, a blanket, water to put out the fire. beaches.lacounty.gov
Venice Canals walk + Abbot Kinney coffee — free. Most LA natives have somehow never done it. Park near Washington and Pacific, walk the bridges over a mile and a half of canals, then drift over to Abbot Kinney for a coffee or a glass of wine at Felix or Gjelina's bar. Quietly one of the most romantic miles in the city. venicecanals.org
The Last Bookstore + dinner at Grand Central Market — under $40 for two. Wander the labyrinth of stacks at The Last Bookstore in DTLA — second-floor book tunnel is the photo. Then walk five minutes to Grand Central Market for tacos at Villa's, sandwiches at Egg Slut, or ramen at Ramen Hood. Easy two-part evening that doesn't need a reservation. lastbookstorela.com
Telescope, terrace, sunset — Griffith Observatory
Eat early at one of the Los Feliz spots (Little Dom's, Found Oyster, All Time), then drive up. Free admission, free public telescopes when the volunteers are out, planetarium shows are $10. The terraces stay open until 10pm and the city lights from the West Terrace are unbeatable. Closed Mondays. Skip weekend crowds — Tuesday or Wednesday after 6 is the sweet spot.
